The capital of the state, the city of Oaxaca is in the Sierra Madre valley at 1,550 meters above sea level, and around 500 kilometers south east of Mexico City. Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the country, and a world heritage center. Together with the rest of the Central Valleys, it is the most important tourist site in the state. Oaxaca City and the Central Valleys boast archeological sites, 16th century convents, baroque churches and civil buildings from the colonial era as well as museums. Moreover, Oaxaca has an important heritage of cultural manifestations, especially the religious parties with their typical Calendas and Mayordomias, all in all making Oaxaca one of the favorite destinations for both national and international tourists. Oaxaca enjoys an average annual temperature of 22º C/ 72º F; with sunny days and cool afternoons that allow one on to the streets to explore the city’s beautiful architecture.
